Calzone is a savory Italian turnover that is made with pizza dough and stuffed with various fillings. Here's a recipe for a classic calzone:
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. pizza dough (homemade or
store-bought)
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Flour for dusting
- Olive oil for brushing
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F
(218°C).
- Carry out the pizza batter on a
floured surface to a thickness of around 1/4 inch. Cut the dough into two
equal halves.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the
marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese, Parmesan
cheese, chopped basil, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
Mix well.
- On one half of each dough,
spread the filling mixture leaving 1 inch border. Fold the other half of
the dough over the filling and press down the edges to seal.
- Brush the calzones with olive
oil and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake the calzones for about
15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the calzones from the
oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
- You can serve the calzone with
some additional marinara sauce on the side, if desired.
Enjoy your
homemade calzones!
