How to make corned beef and cabbage at home?
Corned beef
and cabbage is a traditional Irish-American dish typically served on St.
Patrick's Day, but can be enjoyed in any season. Here's a recipe to make it at
home:
Ingredients:
- 4 pounds corned beef brisket
- 10 small red potatoes
- 5 carrots, peeled and chopped
- 1 large onion, peeled and
chopped
- 1 head of cabbage, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups water
- 1 bottle of dark beer (optional)
- 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
- 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
- 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
- 1 tablespoon allspice berries
- 3 bay leaves
Instructions:
- Flush the corned hamburger
brisket under chilly water and wipe it off. Set aside.
- In a large pot, add the
potatoes, carrots, onion, garlic, black peppercorns, mustard seeds,
coriander seeds, allspice berries, and bay leaves.
- Place the corned beef brisket on
top of the vegetables and spices.
- Pour in enough water to cover
the meat completely. Add the beer if using.
- Bring the pot to a boil, then
reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 3-4 hours, or until the meat
is tender and easily pierced with a fork.
- Eliminate the corned hamburger
from the pot and put it on cutting board.Allow it to rest it for 10-15
minutes prior to cutting it contrary to what would be expected.
- While the meat is resting, add
the chopped cabbage to the pot and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until it is
tender.
- Serve the sliced corned beef
with the cooked vegetables and cabbage. Enjoy!
