                Nalli Nehari

Nalli Nehari is a popular meat dish from the Indian subcontinent, made with tender lamb shanks slow-cooked in a flavorful spice and tomato-based sauce. Here's a recipe for you to try at home:

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 lamb shanks, with the bones and some fat
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish

Instructions:

1.     Flush the legs of lamb and wipe them off with paper towels.put away.

2.     In an enormous pan heat the ghee or oil over medium intensity.

3.     Add the onion and cook until they delicate and clear,around 5-7 minutes.

4.     Add the ginger, garlic, and green chilies and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

5.     Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and mushy, about 5-7 minutes.

6.     Add the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Stir well to combine.

7.     Add the lamb shanks to the pan, making sure they are well coated with the tomato mixture.

8.     Pour in enough water to just cover the lamb shanks. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer, covered, for 2-3 hours or until the lamb is tender and falling off the bone.

9.     Once the lamb is cooked, remove the shanks from the sauce and let them cool slightly. Remove the bones and any excess fat, then shred the meat into bite-sized pieces.

10. Return the shredded meat to the saucepan and let it cook for another 10-15 minutes until the meat is fully heated through and the sauce has thickened slightly.

11. Serve the Nalli Nehari with hot roti or rice, garnished with fresh coriander leaves.
